“My heart has been broken!” I scream at Maddy, who’s looking at me from my bed with pure worry in her eyes.
“I know.” she says, giving me a faint smile. Her efforts to cheer me up are unsuccessful but I appreciate her attempt.
“I mean, I didn’t even know she had a boyfriend! Did you?” I ask, almost too forcefully.
“Of course not,” she defends “I would’ve told you!”
She looks at me again and I catch her glance. The light smile is still patched on her face but now she just looks like she’s passing wind.
“Vi, it’s alright.” She tries to console me but the hole in my heart is too big, too painful. I have been shot but I cannot find the bullet.
“No it’s not!” I shout “She has been clearly flirting with me since the beginning of term yet I saw her this morning snogging her ugly boyfriend-”
“Bit harsh.” Maddy defends.
“Yeah, sorry Dan. I’m sure he’s nice but in this specific situation, I’m not his biggest fan.”
“Understandable.” she laughs.
“Anyway, I was not expecting it!” I throw my arms up in the air for dramatic effect, “I personally feel like half past eight in the morning is a bit too early to be necking your boyfriend in the English building corridor.”
“Agreed.” Maddy nods. She saw them too and I could see the look of disgust on her face as they made out against the display of William Shakespeare.
“My heart has a hole the size of France in it now and I don’t think I will ever find love.”
“Ouch.” Maddy answers, grinning slightly. “You know you will find love, you’re 17.”
“Bella Swan was with Edward by the time she was 17 and married to him by 18!” I oppose, “So I”m seriously falling behind.”
“Vi, you know those books were written by a Mormon, right?”
“Oh shit, you’re right.”
“Exactly. So stop moping about how you will never find love when in fact you have only just started your romantic journey.” Maddy huffs as she crosses her arms in front of her and grins big and wide.
I smile. She has always been the best at cheering me up when my brain goes 100mph and tells me that I’m going to die alone. She is the best person I know.

This is a little dialogue I wrote last week when I was looking for some writing prompts online. The prompt I found was ‘How do you feel when you love someone who does not love you back?’ and I instantly felt like the best way I could convey my feelings was through a funny dialogue between two best friends in secondary school. I experienced something similar when I was younger so I thought it could be cool to write it down on here! I hope you guys like it!- Meg
